Related records in saved searches

I've been trying lately to write custom searches that can access related records that are two (or more) levels away. For example, from a Transaction search, I can pull up fields for the Customer related to that transaction, but I cannot then pull up fields for any other entities (companies, activities, etc.) related to that Customer.

Is it possible to write some sort of SQL query in the Saved Search window that can access related-related records? Or am I stuck doing something with SuiteScript?
