Weight field auto filling on item fulfillments

The weight field on the item fulfillment record is now auto filling with the weight estimate we have on our item records and being set as the actual weight of "box 1". After weighing a package the actual weight is frequently different than what we have on our item records.

I was told by NS tech support this is part of the new release. Other than blanking out all of our weight fields on the item records...is there any way around this? This creates extra editing work for our shipping department.
