Unintended change in stage/status

I want to be able to send samples to prospects by creating a sales order with a non-inventory item with 0 dollar amount.  I would like the stage to stay as prospect but the system is changes it to customer.  Is there a way to create a sales order without affecting the stage on the customer record?
