Fixed Assets and barcode scanner?

Anyone come across this requirement before?  To pre-empt one potential approach, we are NOT using inventory management, but we do have a requirement for support of a bi-annual fixed asset inventory for over 50,000 physical assets and I'd be making the poor soul responsible VERY happy if there was a pre-existing or easy-to-implement solution to scan a barcode on a physical asset and update a field on the corresponding fixed asset record.

Thoughts?
