Doing simple math with the date time fields

Ok, what am I doing wrong? 

 round(({custevent_cxs_init_res_time}-{date})*1440)


Unexpected error. I am assuming that the custom date/time field is different from the built in date/time field. What do I need to do to get this formula to work? If I use, say 

 round(({activity.createddate}-{createddate})*1440)


there is no error.
