Reports - Available through API?

Hi all. I've been wondering if it is possible to get / generate the reports that NetSuite offers.

For example, on the Reports tab of the NetSuite web-browser UI, one might select Reports > Sales > Sales by Item Summary. This generates a nice report detailing sales for a given time period which is categorized by item sold. One can export this report into Excel, Word, or PDF formats and download the file.

Is this functionality accessible through NetSuite's web-services API, or is this functionality only available through NetSuite's browser interface? I've not found any mention of it yet in the forums or the Records and Platform guides.
