People are talking about:  UPGRADES

May 2015

The Upgrade topic can include:  certification, upgrade planning, PUM, and more.

Here are recently asked questions from customers who are planning for an upgrade or in the midst of an upgrade.

Q:      Our servers use Oracle Linux 5.  We wish to upgrade to PT 8.54.  Is this new PeopleTools release supported

                 with Oracle Linux 5?

A:      Yes. Here's how to find it on MOS:

In certification search, enter product = PeopleTools and Release = 8.54, press search.

In the result rows, select  Linux x86-64.

You will see that Oracle Linux 5 as one of the Linux platforms supported for PT8.54.

Search results from the MOS / Certifications / Certification Search

Q:      Can you explain how to have both a 32-bit and 64-bit connectivity client installed and working for an upgrade?

In the upgrade, we need to connect to the Application Designer and the Data Mover, in addition to the database.

A:      If you are upgrading to PT8.54, you will need to use not only a 64-bit Windows machine as your client,

but the 64-bit client connectivity as well.   To connect to the "old release" you will also need the 32-bit connectivity.

Install both.  In the environment variable pathing, list the 32-bit version before the 64-bit version.

For more information, see PeopleBooks > PeopleTools > Change Assistant and Update Manager >

Setting up Client, Source, and Target environments > Configuring the Msft Windows Client Running Change Assistant

Upgrade planning or preparation

Q:      We are curious about installing our new release in the decoupled manner.  Will this impact the application at all?

A:       There should be no functional application impact if you have satisfied the application release requirement for use of

                  a decoupled installation.

The decoupled PS_HOME requires a minimum application version of 9.1 FP2 to work,  and a minimum of PeopleTools 8.52.

For more information, see  E-INST Installation methods:  Classic PsHome,  PS_APP_HOME,  and

                  PS_CUST_HOME (Doc ID 1557074.1).

Q:       Are there known issues when removing the descending indexes from tables in a PeopleSoft Oracle database?

A:       [Background] The PeopleTools strategy regarding the use of descending indexes has changed to now

eliminate the use of DESC clause in Oracle 12c.  This approach is required for implementations on Oracle 12c

and is optional, appropriate, and supported for existing Oracle 10g and 11g implementations.

To learn more, see our our developers' document Removing Descending Indices for PeopleSoft Databases (Doc ID 1909646.1).

Q:      We are planning to upgrade to application release 9.2. When is the best time to add a new language?

A:        Oracle has no formal recommendations. That said, it is easier to add languages to an English-only

                  environment before an upgrade.

Simply ensure that your upgrade source environment has the new languages installed and they will be

                  added automatically with the upgrade.
If you are thinking of using a PUM Upgrade Source (as your source), first check the chart on the

PeopleSoft Upgrade Source Images Home Page (Doc ID 1552580.1) for your application, to see if this is

supported for your product upgrade.      You'll see the statement:

"If you use or require multi-lingual functionality, then you must install the Demo Database

using the classic installation method. "

The Update images,  such as PeopleSoft Update Image FSCM 9.2.011, do have the option for including

ML objects for applying updates, but  cannot be used as a source for an upgrade.

Q:      Where do we get the Crystal executables for PT8.54?

A:      Customers need to contact SAP to receive a license to download the crystal client.

SAP provides the license, software and client.

Oracle can no longer legally distribute or supply Crystal software.

For more information, see Tech Update – Oracle Retires Support for Crystal Reports (Doc ID 1927865.1)

and Tech Update - Oracle Modifies Business Objects Enterprise and Crystal Reports Licensing

                 for PeopleSoft (Doc ID 1184384.1)

PeopleSoft Update Manager (PUM)

Q:     After applying a PUM image (to an environment) is the database stamped with the PI's release number?

A:      No, but all the applied patches will be tracked in the table PS_MAINTENANCE_LOG.

For more information, see E-PUM How to Verify an Installed PUM Image? (Doc ID 2001536.1) and

What is Database Stamping ? (Doc ID 829203.1).

Q:      We would like to upgrade from FSCM 9.1 / PT8.52 to FSCM 9.1 / PT 8.54.  Would this require use of PUM?

We would like to upgrade from FSCM 9.1 / PT 8.52 to FSCM 9.2 Image 11 / PT 8.54.  Would this require use of PUM?

A:       A PeopleTools only upgrade does not currently require use of PUM.

The application upgrade FSCM 9.1 to 9.2 Image 11 does utilize PUM.  If your site is English-only, you can use both

                 a.  The Source Image for upgrade FSCM 9.1 to 9.2 Image 11 (this will be your Source Demo environment).

                 b.  The Update Image FSCM 9.2 Image 12 to apply  any additional required-for-upgrade patches to the Source Image.

The delivered Image 11 will contain required-for-upgrade patches but you'll need Image 12 to find any that are

                 available after Image 11.

To learn more about PUM, see the PUM Home Page (Doc ID 1641843.2).

To learn more about the FSCM upgrades, see PeopleSoft Financials and Supply Chain Management

Upgrade Home Page (Doc ID 1963697.2). On this page, tab FSCM 9.1 to 9.2 PI11, you will see that the minimum

                 PeopleTools release is PT8.54.08.

Q:      When installing the HCM 9.2.012 PUM image (PI) on my Windows 7 64-bit laptop, I received an error.  The error was

a VERR_TAR_CHKSUM_MISMATCH error about half way during the import process.   My VBOX version is 4.2.16 r86992.

Attempts to re-download the image have not gotten me past the CHKSUM error.

A:       First thing to do:  Check the PUM Home Page / Known Issues tab (Doc ID 1641843.2).

Are there reports in the Known Issues HCM section, of problems with this Image?

Is this is Known Issue with the HCM Image 12?  Answer is No.

The action that can resolve this problem is to install the latest version of VBOX:  4.3.28, then redownload.

As of this writing (May 19th, 2015), VirtualBox 4.2.30, 4.1.38, 4.0.30 and 3.2.28 releases are available. These are

maintenance releases which improve stability and fix regressions.

Find these at  Oracle VM VirtualBox ,

For more information, see E-PUM Image File Fails to Import Successfully using Virtual Box (Doc ID 1599692.1).

(fyi) When installing a new version of VirtualBox, make sure you reboot in-between uninstalling the old version

and installing the new version.   See solution: E-PUM: Starting the VBOX Error "No bootable medium found!

                 System halted" (Doc ID 2001863.1)

Upgrade tasks failing

Q:     Reports of upgrade scripts are missing for the HCM 9.0 to 9.2 upgrade.

A:      1) See  DLUPX17E.DMS scripts missing during HRMS 9.0 to 9.2 upgrade (Doc ID 1948813.1)

                 2) (another situation) Where required upgrade scripts were found to have size = 0 in the unix directory

a workaround that helped was to re-download the HCM 9.2 Update Image 9, and the scripts

                     were downloaded to Windows directory.

Mario Mendoza [ARBI] Identifying Duplicate Invoices

A customer wanted to identify the duplicate invoices caused by approving billing worksheets twice, so they can cancel the second one.  The invoices share the same contract number, invoice date, operator id and bill status.  This SQL returns the larger of the invoice ids, where there is more than one for given combination.

FROM   ps_bi_hdr b
WHERE  b.contract_num <> ' '
AND    invoice_dt = '&Date'
AND    invoice LIKE 'INV%'
AND    last_maint_oprid = '&Operator'
AND    bill_status = 'RDY'
AND    b.invoice =
                SELECT   Max(b2.invoice)
                FROM     ps_bi_hdr b2
                WHERE    b2.business_unit = b.business_unit
                AND      b2.contract_num = b.contract_num
                GROUP BY b2.contract_num)
AND    (
                SELECT   count(*)
                FROM     ps_bi_hdr b3
                WHERE    b3.business_unit = b.business_unit
                AND      b3.contract_num = b.contract_num
                GROUP BY b3.contract_num) > 1

Raul Cocias [AM] Check if depreciation is wrong!

A first step to check for depreciation of an asset if it is incorrect you can do the following verification Sum the cost field for the lines on the cost table – (less) salvage value and compare it with the sum of the depr filed from depreciation table. If sums are different means depreciation is wrong.

e.g Asset asset1_raul has 2 lines on cost ADD 100 and ADJ 30   with salvage value 10 and on depreciation I find 3 lines with (40 50 60)I will do :100+30-10 is 120 on cost and 40+50+60 which is e 150 on depreciation . It means there is something wrong with my depreciation.

Jos Bergman [PA] Troubleshooting Tip: Performance

Experiencing bad performance while running any of the feeder engines (such as PC_AP_TO_PC), check if changes were made to the delivered index for the table PS_PROJ_RESOURCE. Query the tables DBA_INDEXES and DBA_IND_COLUMNS to compare the rows with the ones in DEMO.

The Supplier Relationship Management - PSFT (MOSC) (SRM) and Order Fulfillment, Costing, & Planning - PSFT (MOSC) communities will be merging to form our new “Supply Chain Management - PSFT (MOSC)” community space this Friday (May 15, 2015). You will soon be able to go to the one community (Supply Chain Management community) instead of going to two different communities for the SCM/SRM product area discussions.

The new “Supply Chain Management - PSFT (MOSC)” (SCM) community will have all of the existing discussion threads and documents from the previous two old communities. Also the SCM community will have “Categories” which display discussion threads by product (i.e. eProcurement, Inventory, Order Management, Purchasing, etc). The Categories section is located on the left side of the community page, either under the Overview or Content tabs.

We encourage you to continue to use our MOS Communities and especially our new PeopleSoft Supply Chain Management community! The MOS Communities are a great place to ask questions on product features, upgrades, processes, etc… and to collaborate with other customers.

Check out this new Gartner report guiding customers on how PeopleSoft fits into their ERP strategy.  In this report Gartner separates PeopleSoft rumor from fact – debunking much of the fear, uncertainty and doubt about PeopleSoft’s viability and Oracle’s ongoing commitment in PeopleSoft.  Read it for yourself here:

Some of the highlights includes:

"PeopleSoft Selective Adoption — Oracle invested in the future of the suite with the enactment of PeopleSoft Selective Adoption enabled by PeopleSoft Update Manager (PUM) in release 9.2. PeopleSoft Selective Adoption is an attempt by Oracle to reduce the total cost of ownership (TCO) by reducing the time required for upgrades and permit clients to adopt new functionality on a more frequent basis. This change has been well-received by the clients Gartner has spoken with. "

"Release 9.2 enhanced functionality — Feedback from clients indicates that the most popular functional enhancements to PeopleSoft in release 9.2 were WorkCenters and Pivot Grids, which increased productivity and ease of use."

"Major future enhancements — Moving forward, Oracle's R&D investment will be cooperatively planned across multiple product lines with each product line having distinct investment strategies.

"Evaluate PeopleSoft as You Would Any Other ERP Suite in the Postmodern Era

PeopleSoft is still a viable ERP solution for large enterprises and upper-midmarket companies requiring administrative ERP. Oracle has made some efforts with its partners to reduce implementation timelines and costs, and has made some recent improvements to reduce the cost to clients of staying current on releases."
