Using standard/user/AvatarDisplay widget to display avatar

We are in the process of migrating from Hivelive to Community Self Service and using standard/user/AvatarDisplay  widget to display avatar for user and tried the suggested usage but getting error like user id is not passed :

<rn:widget path="user/AvatarDisplay" avatar_size="small" />

How do we retrieve currently logged in users ID to the widget "user_id".

If you have any reference site built on community self service , that would be very useful.
