What is the source for the population column that can be added in OAC data import?

When a new dataset is brought into OAC that has certain geographic columns (city, state, etc.) one of the suggested columns in the data enrichment panel is population.  Where does that population value come from?   Is there a pointer to the actual source.  Would like to know what year that population value comes from.
