Send an email when a custom field on the Contact workspace is updated

Contact workspace. If a custom field is updated an email needs to be sent.

Does it matter if the field is a custom field compared to a regular contact field? Should a business rule be used?

Any examples or directions to the appropriate documentation would be a great help. Thanks.
