Need some documentation on how to extend widgets

Content (required):

We have a customized okcsSearchResult widget in our Customer Portal that we'd like to extend to provide better search results e.g. bundle articles with their attachments into single search results and sort search results by date last updated.

Is there a document or article that outlines (from a developer point of view) the technical details on how to extend widgets, and modify the code (PHP, ejs, js, etc.) to modify the behavior?
