How do I stop the Custom Object Menu from reordering the menu items?

Saving Custom Object Menu causes items to reorder

Content (required):

I have a custom object menu with around 50 items which I have ordered alphabetically. However, sometimes when I amend an item label or add a new item, then place it alphabetically, clicking Save reorders the one I've amended/added, so I end up moving and saving, moving and saving, moving and saving until finally the system saves it in the right order.

It's a complete nightmare! Any ideas?
