Changing the phone input mask

I would like to update the phone input mask. Our phone number fields contact various formats, including alpha characters and phone extension. I have a few questions about input masking and its impact with our current data:
Content (required):

  • If I change the data mask, will the change only apply to new contact records?
  • If a user opens a contact record to edit another field, and the contact record currently has phone number that does not meet the new criteria, will the user be forced to update the phone number to save the record?
  • Will the system try to automatically apply the new mask to all the contact records, and generate errors for contact records that do not match the revised phone number criteria?
