Need a solution to copy Asset field into Asset Name

Without commenting on my opion on the NEW ASSET functionality I have a need to not use ASSET NAME. Defaulting the field to a value like MY ASSET does not work because on the incident workspace the lookup field value is ASSET Name so every asset attached to an incident will show as "MY ASSET" which is not useful to an Agent at all. I am thinking copying either serial number or product name into the Asset name field.

1. My first thought was an ADDIN but from looking at the documentation Asset is not available in the ADDIN framework
