Update the Category field when Product is updated

We currently have incident workspace rules that sets the value of the Product field. And when the Product is updated, the list of categories is also updated in the Category field based on the Products/Categories/Dispositions links. However, we have A LOT of workspace rules that changes the value of the Product field and impacts the incident workspace overall.

If I use Javascript API, I can eliminate 95% of the workspace rules. However, when I set the value of the Product field, the list of categories in the Category field does not update. Is there a way to force the field to update?
