Best way to show a +40character menu value on a Report

Problem: Customer has in Incident Object a list of 60 values of a menu field called "Type" that some of them exceed 40characters. That is the max. limit of a menu value field. We managed to shorten it a little, using abbrevations, etc, but customer wants definitively the correct (long) description to be shown at least in a report.

In your expertise, what is the best way to accomplish this? We thought of two solutions:

1) Using calculate column and several IFs / DECODEs  (but it is WAAAAAY too loong, maybe impossible)
2) Creating a new Custom Object with a menu field ("Abbrevation"), and a Text field ("Description")....associate with Incident, show the menu field for input, and in the report show the abbrevation (we are not sure if it's possible, we were thinking theorically).

Howdy, Stranger!
