putting contacts on a list from an external source

Hi,

We are trying to find a way of placing 100's of contacts that are in our external database, into a contact list at a point in time.

We want a user to be able to pick a list (which we can do), select a bunch of contacts in the external system and press go, and those contacts are placed on that list - repeat with another list....

From what I've read so far, you cannot add contacts to list from the SOAP interface, can anyone think of any other ways of achieving this?
