Disable Customer Portal but keep chat

Hi All - I am looking for advice on how to disable the customer portal (prevent access to it from the internet) but retain the chat function which we have integrated into our website using the syndicated chat widget.

It looks like putting the CP into maintenance mode will take down chat also so I assume I will need to amend the pages with the CP itself.
