Update address fields from the portal

Hello,
We are trying to edit contact address via the portal (we are allowing it to our customers, without the need to login) but i notify that in case the customer is already in the Oracle it not optional, only when it new record in Oracle.
We can't let the customers to edit their address via the portal?
I found out this article, but it not handy:
