SOAP API and trying to create contacts with NULL date fields

Hello, In our SOAP API Contact record load, we have some custom fields that are type date that we know will be null value(example Termination Date). The API to fails if any fields are null, so how do we resolve this? do we have to populate the custom date field with a fake date?
