Help on Custom SSO Integration

Our Customer is looking for a non-SAML based custom integration solution to enable a User to Login to the Customer Portal. The User will be authenticated by the Identity Provider before he is directed to the Customer Portal site hence there is no requirement to authenticate the User at Service Cloud.
But, it is important to identify the Contact record (in the Cloud) corresponding to the User, to support certain Business processes/functionality.

The proposed solution is to pass the Unique Identifier of the User (Email or Employee Id) in the Customer Portal URL so that the User can be matched with a Contact record in the database and allowed to Pass through.
