Max number of variables?

Just curious if anyone knows a real or practical limit on the number of answer variables you can set up on a site. I can't see this listed anywhere, but I'd rather not stumble into the limit by accident.

I'm only using a couple of dozen at the moment, but others in my organization have asked if it was possible to use hundreds. I've already explained how that might be a maintenance nightmare - not to mention impractical for authors, who would have to know or have a list of them somewhere. But the answer still eludes me.
