Can we set the standard field value to the custom field value whenever the value has been inserted..

Hi All,

Can we set the standard field value to the custom field value whenever the value has been inserted in to the standard field.

For e.g., In contacts,we have a standard field as external reference, that field value has to be set in the custom field value whenver the contact record has been created.

Kindly give me idea on this.
