Custom Object Relationships

We have several different "types" of incidents we're trying to create (Returned goods, quality issue, documentation request, etc.).  Each type has several of their own fields so I want to break them out into their own custom objects.  However, I would like to be able to insert the fields from these custom objects into my Incident workspace.  In order to do this, the user guide says that I would need to make the incident object a child of each of my custom objects. (this is actually backwards from the what I originally thought which is that the custom objects should be
