Converting to Message Template

We recently upgraded to May16 and I was looking into enabling message templates. We are only allowed to send messages as text and cannot use HTML. We currently are using rules to send standard text  for create and close responses back to the end users.  I have enabled message templates on our development site and have started testing.  However I am not seeing any benefits going to message templates since we can only send text and we already have business rules to send standard text responses. I am wondering am I messing something here.  Has anyone else who can only send text and using
