If you're comfortable with the dbx cmdline you can do something like this:
(dbx-top) x (char *) $g1/s

I am new to dbxtool and command line dbx. I tried your example with an -m32 and -m64 program and I am getting an error:
bad print format
Can you please explain more how I can use this? Thank you!
Can you please copy-paste exactly what you typed.
Dbx will say "bad print format \"%s\"" and echo the format it didn't understand.
For example a capital 'S' isn't understood:
(dbx-top) x (char *) $g1 / S
dbx: bad print format "S"
