Under OL 6.1, when you ran /etc/init.d/oracleasm configure, which owner and group did you specify? Does the owner and group exist?
In one of my previous post you can see that I specified oracle, dba...
it starts with:
Same here. No luck....
and yes both do exist.
I did everything similar under 6.1 as I did it under 5.7.
Also this could be a virtualbox issue :(
We can probably exclude a Virtualbox issue because that's what I used to test it under 6.1.
I had similar problems with Oracle Linux 6 U1 and the reason was that SELINUX was enforced:
Yes you right. selinux was it :(
Thank you very much!
Interesting... SELinux is often the culprit. I wonder though if there were any warnings about that in logs. When I install the OS I automatically disable SELinux without thinking much about it, sort of a habit. I think the installation documentation actually has a note about SELinux.

I tried Oracle 6.4. on Virtual Box and didn't have to go the raw device direction. Just using a simple linux partition.
After configuring the asm driver,
I was stocked at Instantiating disk: failed to.
It seems like the driver isn't loaded directly after configuration but after rebooting.
After this I could create the disk without any problems.
So, if you just did a oracle configure, you would have to reboot the machine so that the driver get's loaded.
Probably there are better ways to load the driver.
