There is also the PDF renderer project on Java.net. This was originally contributed by Sun and has been taken over by the open source community. It uses Java2D for rendering, but I imaging some interesting work could be done there to port to JavaFX.
Is there any chance that the WebEngine could support native platform plugins at some point?You can create a custom URL handler for webview, and switch on the mime type or file extension to invoke a StackPane or PopUp which layers over the top of the WebView to create a custom content handler (in Java). Using something like JNI you could invoke something like an ActiveX control. So I'm guessing it is possible, with some work, to create something which is like a native platform plugin - it just would not be an officially supported thing.
