    Installing Essbase V11.1.2.1

    mattd399267
      Hello,

We currently have Essbase V9.3.0.1 installed on 64-bit Solaris SPARC. We are looking to install the latest version of Essbase V11.1.2.1 and only Essbase - not interested in any of the other products that seem to come along with it. Is this a possible migration path? I understand the documentation states there are certain migration paths, but it also seems to indicate that it is only if you are using licensing and provisioning, which we are not. We basically just want to install the new version and migrate the data/cubs over to the newest version.

In one single folder I have downloaded all of the EPM products and the System Installer and I believe I have correctly installed just Essbase (and the Foundation Services - not sure if those are necessary). My biggest concern is that the previousl install path was /usr/local/essbase and when I installed EPM (which I assume is just a renamed Essbase) it installed to /essbase11121/Oracle/Middleware/… (etc). Just not sure if I have the correct product installed.

Would anyone be able to point me in the direction of documentation and/or install binaries that will allow me to just install and run Essbase V11.1.2.1 so I can confirm with my team that it has been installed correctly.

Thank you in advance for your help.

          Have a read of http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E17236_01/epm.1112/epm_install_11121/ch02s03s02.html
It should give you a good idea of the files you need for essbase.

          Cheers

            John,

Thanks for the quick reply. It seems I have all the files indicated in the table you linked.

Would you be able to comment on the migration path from 9.3.0.1 to 11.1.2.1? Is this a possible migration path? I understand the documentation states there are certain migration paths, but it also seems to indicate that it is only if you are using licensing and provisioning, which we are not. We basically just want to install the new version and migrate the data/cubs over to the newest version.

The official upgrade path is 9.3.3 to 11.1.2.1, I have never tried using the documented upgrade with a version that is not on the supported upgrade list.
If you are just wanting to use essbase then a number of options available for instance if your existing environment is still running then you could use the EAS migration wizard to migrate the applications, data would be separate.

              Cheers

I will definitely look into the Migration Wizard.

Using this, you are saying that /usr/local/essbase/app (our Applications), would be migrated over but the data will not? Does this mean the application's data or the data of Essbase itself.

I was under the assumption that the data is stored in each corresponding folder in /app -- is this true or is the data stored somewhere else?

                Thanks in advance.

The migration wizard does not migrate the data of each essbase database, if using this method it can be exported from the existing version and imported in to the 11.1.2.1 version.
The location of the data stored in each database depends on the settings for the database, it is possible to store the data in a different location than the default app\db dir.

It may be possible to use the staging tool on a version not in the supported path, I have just not tried - http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E17236_01/epm.1112/epm_install_11121/ch05s06s03s01.html
If you were going down that route I would make sure you have exported all the data and have backups of the essbase objects just in case does go wrong.

                  Cheers

John - thank you again for all your help.

I reached out to someone on my team who is familiar with our current Essbase environment and they gave me this information and has a few questions about the migration/upgrade. If you or anyone could be of help with these, it would be greatly appreciated.

                    -----
In our current essbase setup we have applications configured under /usr/local/essbase/app/ folder and under it we have different folders for different applications. All these applications stores it's metadata , logs, data under the defined directory structure - we have stores data in files. So as you can see the path for the data file is /usr/local/essbase/app/APP_NAME/default - the .dat file is the data.

Here, if you are planning to use the migration wizard , please try to check on the following points:

                    1. You need to have the Existing 9.3.0 application in place along with the new version 11.1.2.1 in the same machine ? ( or in the same machine could we use the migration wizard with the same application name ? ) .

                    2. Migration wizard should move all the artifacts (rule files, filters (user/group access) etc.

Thanks again for all your help.

To use the migration wizard both source and target essbase instances have to be running, it doesn't matter where they are located just as long as EAS can connect to them.
For information on what is migrated and not using the wizard have a read of - http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E17236_01/epm.1112/eas_help/dbwzmigrpost-migration.html
