Pl identify the version of Win 7 - 10g XE is not certified to be installed on Win 7
Is there a reason you cannot install 11g XE ? You will need Win 7 Professional or higher - Home version is not supported.
i am using windows 7 home basic (64 bit) on my laptop. my instructor uses oracle 10g express edition. please provide me link(from where to download oracle for my laptop) and sufficient information what shall i do.From this link you can download Oracle *11gXE* and if you scroll down you'll find also the link to donwload Oracle *10gXE*:
For the documentation you'll find the books here:
Anyway, as previously posted, Windows 7 Home Basic Edition is not recommended.
Hope this help.
One options you have is to
1. Download Oracle VirtualBox (for free) from https://www.virtualbox.org/, then install it on your Win 7 machine.
2. Download OEL 5.7 64-bit (for free) from https://linux.oracle.com/pls/apex/f?p=101:3 , and install OEL 5.7 in the VM you created above
3. Download 11gXE (see link Jean provided above) and install 11gXE in the OEL VM
Thanks for help.
I have installed virtual box on my laptop. please provide steps on how to install oracle 11g xe in oem 5.7 on virtual box together with the choosing the right version of oem 5.7 from download page(https://linux.oracle.com/pls/apex/f?p=101:3 ) . Will oracle 10g xe will work on this platform. thanks
Installing Virtualbox on Windows is documented here - https://www.virtualbox.org/manual/ch02.html#installation_windows
This is very simple and straightforward. After you install, you will have to create a linux virtual machine (VM) and allocate CPU/disk/memory to it - see https://www.virtualbox.org/manual/ch03.html
Download OEL 5.7 from the link I posted above, and install it in the linux VM - install guide is here https://linux.oracle.com/documentation/EL5/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux-5-Installation_Guide-en-US.pdf
After you install OEL 5.7, then install 11gXE in OEL 5.7 following the steps in http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E17781_01/install.112/e18802/toc.htm
10g XE is not supported on OEL or Win 7, so it will not be an easy task to install 10g XE on the hardware that you have.
Depending on what type of development or course you are doing, version of and type of database product could matter.
If you really need 10g XE (over say any edition of 11.2), then you could try OEL 4 (one of the older updates). But as said above, it's not on the list of required operating systems. Also, in that case, make sure you create a 32-bit guest (VBox vm) becuase there is no 64-bit version of 10g XE.
thanx for your kind help
when i install linux kernel 2.6.x(ubuntu 11.10) on virtual machine it installs sucessfully, but on starting it only black screen appears in vmware screen, same happens with backtrack 5 (O.S.) when i install on vmware. Actually my laptop is having problem with linux, because when i install ubuntu on another drive(dual boot with win 7) it installs sucessfully but on starting it it always starts with brightness zero after booting (i.e. screen appears black), i have to increase brightness, and backtrack does not install.
My laptop is hp pavilion dm4 1222tx ,having windows 7(home basic),64 bit . thanks
For practicing Oracle, consider following Srini's advice above and use:
- Oracle VirtualBox, choose a 32-bit vm for 10g XE, otherwise 64-bit vm.
- Oracle Linux / OEL, probably 4.x to match 10g XE age, or 5 update 7 or so for current XE 11.2.
- Oracle 10g XE or 11g XE, the latter if possible, perhaps after verifying with your instructor.
Also, just the task of installing and setting up the above could make for a nice learning experience!

I have downloaded Oracle Linux Release 4 Update 8 for x86 (32 Bit) - DVD V16749-01 from the link (https://edelivery.oracle.com/EPD/Download/get_form?egroup_aru_number=11379160). So after that i have to install on my vmware by creating linux virtual machine (VM) and allocate CPU/disk/memory to it (32 bit). and then install on oracle on that platform. Once again i want to ask you that my laptop is 64 bit so to run the oracle 10g xe which is for 32 bit i would have install on ocracle vmware by creating 32 bit cpu/disk/memory to it. thanks
