How Do I Copy Files to MS Windows Local Drive From ASM

All,

How to I refer to a Windows drive letter in the cp command? When I use C:\my_path\my_file ASMCMD gives me an ASMCMD-08010 no user name is specified in remote instance because it thinks the colon is part of a connect string. I've spent a whole afternoon trying to figure this out and am stumped> :-(

TIA,
Bob S.

Post complete statement you used, along with the exact error you recived.

Here's the commands I've tried. For the local Windows file reference you can see I tried with no quotes, single and double quotes. All produce the same error. The ASMCMD command interpretor is reading the colon as part of a connect string.

    ASMCMD [+group0/jlatdem1/controlfile] > cp C:\app\oracle\oradata\JLATDEM1\CONTROL03.CTL CONTROL01.CTL
ASMCMD-08010: no usr name is specified in remote instance connect_string->'C'
    ASMCMD [+group0/jlatdem1/controlfile] > cp 'C:\app\oracle\oradata\JLATDEM1\CONTROL03.CTL' CONTROL01.CTL
ASMCMD-08010: no usr name is specified in remote instance connect_string->'C'
    ASMCMD [+group0/jlatdem1/controlfile] > cp "C:\app\oracle\oradata\JLATDEM1\CONTROL03.CTL" CONTROL01.CTL
ASMCMD-08010: no usr name is specified in remote instance connect_string->'C:apporacleoradataJLATDEM
    1CONTROL03.CTL'
    ASMCMD [+group0/jlatdem1/controlfile] >

    Thnaks for your help,
    Bob

    Hi,

it may sound stupid, but have you tried with / slashed instead of \ ?

    Sebastian,

Just tried "/" instead of "\" exact same error as before the ORA-08010.

Was just thinking if there is a way to refer to the drive using "Disk0" instead of C:. Any ideas anyone?

    Hi Bob,

    try

    \\C\temp

Hopefully you are not using 11.1.0.6 - in that version this did not work. Has to be 11.1.0.7 or 11.2

    Regards

    Sebastian,

    ASMCMD [+group0/jlatdem1/controlfile] > cp \\C\app\oracle\oradata\JLATDEM1\CONTROL03.CTL CONTROL01.CTL
ASMCMD-08004: ASM file path '\\C\app\oracle\oradata\JLATDEM1\CONTROL03.CTL' contains an invalid alias name
    ASMCMD-08014: can not open file->'\\C\app\oracle\oradata\JLATDEM1\CONTROL03.CTL'
    ASMCMD [+group0/jlatdem1/controlfile] >

When I changed backslash to a regular slash the alias error message went away but still cannot open the file. I'm running ASMCMD as an Administrator in Windows so I think its not a file permissions problem but I'm not 100% sure about that.

    ASMCMD [+group0/jlatdem1/controlfile] > cp //C/app/oracle/oradata/JLATDEM1/CONTROL03.CTL CONTROL01.CTL
    ASMCMD-08014: can not open file->'//C/app/oracle/oradata/JLATDEM1/CONTROL03.CTL'
    ASMCMD [+group0/jlatdem1/controlfile] >

Is the \\drive_letter\path format style considered Universal Naming Convention (UNC)?

    Thanks,
    Bob

PS I even shut down the database instance to make sure the file wasn't locked because Oracle was running.

    Hi Bob,

unfortunately have no windows atm myself... so some more questions:

What version is your database/asm atm?

Does copying from ASM to filesystem work (try with relative path \temp and then with full path c\\temp?

If this works, does relative path work copying to ASM?
    '\app\oracle\oradata\JLATDEM1\CONTROL03.CTL' ?

    One workaround just in case:

If your idea is to copy a controlfile to ASM, because you have problems

    RMAN> CONNECT TARGET SYS/<PWD>@DATABASE
    RMAN> RESTORE CONTROLFILE FROM 'C:\app\oracle\oradata\JLATDEM1\CONTROL03.CTL';

    Hi Bob,

here is the solution for your problem.

Under Windows, Oracle always takes the drive letter from your server, where your oracle software is installed.
When you try to copy with the cp-command you don't have to specify the drive letter.

    For example:
    ASMCMD [+group0/jlatdem1/controlfile] > cp \app\oracle\oradata\JLATDEM1\CONTROL03.CTL CONTROL01.CTL

    or

    cp +recov/rzdba13/archivelog/2010_10_04/thread_1_seq_426.486.731523803 /temp/archivelog

The last command copies the file thread_1_seq_426.486.731523803 to c:\temp\archivelog. The directory "archivelog" must exist before executing the copy command.

Try it and you will succeed.
    Have fun.

Haven't seen him around in a while. And it's no wonder - this thread is well over a year old. In fact, it went dormant before you joined the forum.

I don't have the answer you are looking for. Never tried to do this myself. I see lots of hits on 'ASMCMD-08010" on google.
