          That's good news!
          Now look at the instance to be sure you got the right one:
          select * from v$instance;
          Give a password to sys:
          alter user sys identified by <yourpassword>;
          select * from v$pwfile_users;
          You should see an entry for sys in the last view.
          Now look whether there is a recovery area specified:
          show parameter recovery_area
          What do you see?
