It is possible by having the applet read a socket down which the server is writing the updates. The applet displays them as received. Nothing to do with 'refreshing the HTML'.

The listener is listening to the queue and is able to fetch the messages.How can be it displayed on HTML at the same time ?

The alternative is to use the JSObject to manipulate HTML elements on the page through DOM. Oracle has a nice example do just that.
