There are total 10 instances running on my sun solaris server 10.10 instances on a single server? Why so many?

We are not using AMM as of now.... and we maintain 10 different releases for same application on different instances with 64GB RAM on the server.
Is this because of low shm-memory setting at OS level or low SGA parameter that causing out of memory errors?
