        For what's it worth I was having what appears to be exactly the same problem, and have gotten past it. The key was something I saw earlier in this thread:

        (HOST=ol5-112.localdomain)

        I had the same thing in the listener.ora file that the installer generated. Like you, it was not the name assigned to the machine. I edited the file while the Installer was displaying the dialog about the NCA having failed, replaced ol5-112 with the actual hostname of the machine, and then clicked the Retry button in the Installer. Finally got past this stage!
        Thanks vessey, here's what mine said:

        [root@nitrogen ~]# cat /app/oracle/product/11.2.0/db_1/network/admin/listener.ora
        # listener.ora Network Configuration File: /app/oracle/product/11.2.0/db_1/network/admin/listener.ora
        # Generated by Oracle configuration tools.

        LISTENER =
        (DESCRIPTION_LIST =
        (DESCRIPTION =
        (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = IPC)(KEY = EXTPROC1521))
        (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = ol5-112.localdomain)(PORT = 1521))
        )
        )

        ADR_BASE_LISTENER = /app/oracle

        I changed this line
        (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = ol5-112.localdomain)(PORT = 1521))
        to
        (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = nitrogen.localdomain)(PORT = 1521))
        I then proceeded with the installation. I rebooted and then did:

            Anyone know what I need to do? I presume the database is open, but there is no instance running?

                      If your SID is indeed DB11G, then you are missing the init.ora file for this database. You will need to create one before starting up the database.

                        I might just try the installation for the fifth time using the defaults in the dialogs. The installer is clearly very buggy if you use non-default values.

                          According to what you have posted, your SID is "nitro", not DB11G. If you set your ORACLE_SID environment variable to "nitro", you should be able to start up the database (assuming all of the needed database files are present and intact)

                            I reverted my VM and tried again. This time I double checked all the environment variables and I used the installer defaults just to be safe. I stumbled a bit along the way but I now have it working, with Enterprise Manager working and I can connect to it using SQL Developer on my windows 7 machine. I recorded the install here in case anyone in future gets stuck http://youtu.be/MkpTNEZGSP0

                            Thanks to everyone that helped. Appreciated.
