ONSDatabaseEventHandlerThread constantly running

I've setup a PooledDataSource for an Oracle RAC using FastConnectionFailover and ONS properties, but I'm finding that after getting a connection (and closing it) from the pool, I'm seeing my CPU resources for the JVM running at 50% of my system (quad core).

Doing a thread dump I can see that the ONSDatabaseEventHandlerThread and ONSRuntimeLBEventHandlerThread are running, so I'm assuming that each of them are running constantly (they seem to contain a do while(true) loop and thus sucking up half my system resources.

This doesn't strike me as being correct, so can anyone suggest why these threads might be running?
