Thanks a lot Dietmar, finally was able to implement SSL. After getting the certificate. put it in the wallet and made changes in ssl.conf file on the apache server. And the as you mentioned created an application process since I want ssl to be implemented only for my application and it worked!!! (without impacting other applications). In this whole process learnt a bit about public key encryption and what certificates are...Once again thanks for your guidance!!!

        1. If I would want to implement SSL for all the applications what would be the small configuration change required?
        2. Also in the config file (ssl.conf) I see 2 parameters, port and listen...whats the difference between them?

          Hi Nazeem,

          good news :).
          1. If I would want to implement SSL for all the applications what would be the small configuration change required?
          Try one of the following:
          http://www.cyberciti.biz/tips/howto-apache-force-https-secure-connections.html
          http://wiki.apache.org/httpd/RewriteHTTPToHTTPS
          http://wiki.apache.org/httpd/RedirectSSL
          2. Also in the config file (ssl.conf) I see 2 parameters, port and listen...whats the difference between them?
Well, there are only small differences in Apache 1.3.

I usually set the Port directive for the first port my Apache should listen on and have Listen directives for all addional ports I want it to listen to.

From Apache 2.x on the Port directive has been deprecated and they only use Listen:
          https://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.0/upgrading.html
          http://httpd.apache.org/docs/current/mod/mpm_common.html#listen

          Cheers,
          ~Dietmar
