New to ODI 11g - need help

    945471
      Hi,

I'm new to ODI 11g though I've worked for worked on an old version for some time before..

The problem is that this time I need to set it up from scratch..Though I have installed ODI and configured master and work repositories..

I'm having issues figuring out basic configuration details coz of the new interface and lack of knowledge...

      Bow my questions are -

      * what is that we do in master repository ? Do we need to define all physical, logical connections in master repository including models ? what if we do that in work repository ?

      * Can someone tell me or give me some pointers as how to build models as in reverse engineering a data source so that I can add tables in interfaces..I tried doing it but I'm not sure about many fields..Is there a step be step guide for rever engineering a SQL server database..

      Thanks in advance!!

Master repository store all connection details/ security info / privilege /technology details.
Model is a design time object which resides in work repository.

Following will give you an idea about reverse engineering
          http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E21764_01/integrate.1111/e12643/create_rev_model.htm#ODIDG221

Though it is for Oracle , the process remains same for SQL Server also.

            Thanks sutirtha,

So Physical and logical connections details are stored in master repository..Are knowledge modules also imported in master repository ? If yes what do I do if i imported them in work repository.. can I delete them..?

            Thanks for your previous reply..

You can not import in wor repository table so do not bother about it

                Thanks for that..

I did right click and importing knowledge modules in work repository and I can see the knowledge modules there as well..

So u are saying if i import them again in master repository..the ones already in work repository will be overwritten on ignored?

Sorry ...but its still confusing for me...

                Thanks for replying again

I think you have a misunderstanding between GUI and repositories .

What all operation you perform in GUI (Designer/Topology etc) gets stored in repository.
Some gets stored in master where as others gets stored in work repository tables.

ODI internaly handles this operation , and you can not mixup objects by your own.

Thanks a lot Sutirtha...That really helps..

So this means that even if I created a physical or logical database name or added a new data server in a technology - while Im connected to work repository,
ODI will automatically handle those operations and store them in master repository...?

                    Is that assumption correct?

                    Thanks very much..

Yes , ODI automatically handle those operations and store them in master repository

                      absolutely correct .

                        Hi,

From the above thread, I understand that the Connection, Security info, Technology, Physical , Logical schema and the the data server are stored in the master repository.

I am just wondering which objects are stored only in work repositiry. Is it the interfaces, Package etc ?

                        Thanks,

All the objects created in DESIGNER like interface, Package, procedure, variable, scenario etc are stored in work repository tables .
