Cannot access Revenue site requiring Java applet

I would be eternally grateful if someone could help me with the following problem. I have spent the best part of two days trying to resolve it but without any result.

I need to log on to the Irish Revenue site (ROS) to complete various documents (www.revenue.i.e.). However every time I try to login I get the error message “Java applet failed to load.”

I then go to the Java page to test whether Java is installed. It then usually comes up with an error message suggesting I install the latest updates. This I do, but still the problem persists.

I then decided to uninstall Java and did so using Uninstaller Pro which also managed to delete residual registry entries as well. I then rebooted and reinstalled the very latest updates.

Same story again, error message from the website.

I then tested again, downloaded again, and uninstalled again. I have now done this four five times. In addition I have also checked in Control Panel to make sure that Java is present and also that the plug-ins in Firefox are enabled. I have now done this on three separate computers and have the same results.

I've also done a lot of searches on the web but cannot find the definitive answer to this problem. It is driving me mad and I need to get onto this website to be able to complete statutory returns.

Please, please can someone help or come up with some good suggestions. Thank you

With details provided I am not sure what problem you are facing.
Here is generic advise on troubleshooting strategy.

    Please provide basic details:
    1) OS version and architecture
    2) browser's you are tried (and their versions)
    3) JRE version you have installed (for each architecture)

Assuming you have Java 7 update 7 installed (latest what java.com offers) please report
    4) what version is reported on
    http://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp?detect=jre

    5) Can you run some other sample applets?
    E.g. http://rintintin.colorado.edu/~epperson/Java/TicTacToe.html

Check java troubleshooting guide for tips:
    http://docs.oracle.com/javase/7/docs/webnotes/tsg/TSG-Desktop/html/plugin.html#gcexdf

Specifically start with enabling full tracing details and java console. Do you see it popping when you try to start your target application?
Are there any errors? (If you do not see console then it may be exiting too soon - check if trace file is created in the trace folder).

Maybe the site's applets are not compatible with the latest java version.
Try re-install one of older java versions like JRE 6 from http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javasebusiness/downloads/java-archive-downloads-javase6-419409.html.

Testing with other browsers (especially Internet Explorer) would be a useful idea. Also I expect the people who run the website are used to being harassed by annoyed users (like you) and have some kind of support system for these problems. Perhaps it's just an FAQ page, perhaps it's a "Contact Us" link, I don't know.
