You will need to provide a lot more information, like errors you are getting and how you installed the stuff.

    hello ,
sorry that I can not give too much information.
    But this was the use-case:
    I install java jre-7u7-windows-i586.exe on windows 7.
Then I start IE 9 and point it to a jnlp file.
    Now nothing happens:
If I look at the windows task manager I see that javaws is running for a short period of time and then suddenly stops.

If I look at the the windows event log viewer I see the following error:

Name der fehlerhaften Anwendung: javaws.exe, Version: 10.7.2.10, Zeitstempel: 0x503d8a47
Name des fehlerhaften Moduls: javaws.exe, Version: 10.7.2.10, Zeitstempel: 0x503d8a47

Unfortanately that is all information I can find?!

You could write a bat file with the following env variables set before launching IE.

    set JPI_PLUGIN2_NO_HEARTBEAT=true
    set JPI_PLUGIN2_DEBUG=true
    set JPI_PLUGIN2_VERBOSE=true
    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" %1

This help debugging applet launching, not sure this also help with webstart launching through browser. Give it a try to see if it provide any info.

Thanks a lot for your reply.
but no luck. still nothing happens.... javaws just dies without logging anything?
    maybe its a security problem?

I think you might benefit from widening your testing. IE might be a requirement, but try varying things to get something to "blink". It might fail on IE, but the fix may have nothing to do with it. Might seem like a waste of time. That's because it is, until it is suddenly not.

    Does it work under Firefox?
Does it work on different machines?
Does it work on Mac OSX?
Have you turned on the VM console in control panel?

    Lets start with basics first.

    1. Can you run test applet in the IE? Does java.com report correct java version?

    2. How exactly do you launch it in the web page and command line?
Do you simply have something like Launch or use Deployment toolkit?

If you use DT then install process explorer from sysinternals.com and see what Oracle dlls are loaded by your browser.
Report list of them and versions here.

    3. Does it work if you open File explorer and double click on JNLP file?
If not => it is registration issue. Could be install bug or may be you have custom .jnlp association in the HKCU branch.
Later may need to be cleared manually.

    4. Install process monitor from sysinternals.com.
Use them to see if javaws.exe was launcher (monitor events for javaws process)

If not => Use process monitor to find out how .jnlp association is resolved.
Use regedit to remove .jnlp association data read in the HKCU (user branch of registry) if you have any.

I think I found the reason.

In my jar href attribute I need to provide a query-parameter
    like

    <jar href="pie.jar?param=75654 main="true"/>

javaws 1.6 works but java 1.7 seems to not take the href "pie.jar?param=75654

I would like to keep the parameter on the href because I have some Servletfilters using this param.

    But I just found out

    http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do;jsessionid=df66d2510eb798ffffffff979d2ac0c3006ea?bug_id=7197481

I don't tihnk I can do anything against this.......

Did you actually run without the typo? (missing closing double quote for the href value)
    <jar href="pie.jar?param=75654 main="true"/>

If this is the case then it must fail late in the launch cycle and popup error dialog.

See if you can enable full trace details and trace file will be generated when you reproduce the problem.
Post trace file or link to it here.

If trace file is not generated and JVM is not started then it is probably something else.
