Please send me your monitor so that I can measure it for accuracy. ;-)

I too am very surprised that the three level method ran faster than the simple two. Is it because all those nodes are at a child level and so Oracle accesses them differently than when you break that child out into its own XMLType? That is the only thing I can attribute it too, but it has been a while since I read the binary XML documents you provided me long ago. If so, that raises the question of where the break point is for number of children that it is faster to do as my original two levels compared to your faster three levels.

I thought about doing the same as Jason (indeed based on the sample document), but was I was guessing there was a explicit purpose/reason why the sibling-related axis etc stuff was used.
In my experience, most of the time, sibling axes are used for the wrong reason, or because the document is not normalized - but that doesn't seem to be the case here.

Once we have confirmation about the cardinalities, we'll be able to advise on the best query ;)

    Cardinality

The file is from a service (department) using a third party software, we need to load the data into our 'data warehouse', the only way the service can give us the data is from an xml export. I do not know much about the software but from my knowledge of the service and from looking at the XML file I would have to assume that the episode and episodedetails are 1:1 while the episodedetails and the dailyinterventions are also 1:1 but 1:many with the dailyintervention. As I said I am new to XMLDB and XML. Just ventured into it because it seemed an easier and less labour intensive way to load the XML file into the database, the guys have been transfering to excel, formatting into csv then loading into the database, problems occured when the file was not in the same order every month.

    Following sibling issue

I really do not know better (complete novice) hacked the code from the forum and a book. Was getting errors until I included it and things seems to work.

@Marco : I take the hint and will push for an upgrade :)

    Thanks, that clears things up.
    Give a try to the query suggested by Jason (A_Non) then : {message:id=10624110}
using an intermediate binary XML table (or column), as demonstrated by Marco.

    Hello,

I have finally has a chance to run the queries using my real data.

The 3 step query by Marco takes about 1hr to run and does not load the dailyInterventions

The 2 step by Jason takes 5secs to run (not sure if this is because the data had already been run) and this to does not load the dailyInterventions. I got that earlier on and I think thats why I decided to include the the following sibling axis. Will include it again and see what happens.

    Now that's strange.

There must be something more obvious going on.
Let's try to discover what it is before reverting to suboptimal solutions.

    - Did you use the XMLType table as intermediate storage?
    - Does it work on the sample file you gave?
    - Do you have some <episode> with no <dailyIntervention> occurrence?

Yes I used the XMLType table.
Yes I will have some episodes with no daily interventions.
No, I did not try it on the sample XML. - Problem is I am working from home and at work. due to data confidentiality I cannot be allowed to take data home. I forgot to email myself the sample XML.

More info: I get the record count I expect to get only that the dailyIntervention columns are not populated.

OK, try with OUTER JOINs :
    select x.*, y.*
    from tmp_xml t,
         xmltable('/ClientImport/episode'
                  PASSING t.object_value
                  COLUMNS
                  LOCALID    varchar2(10)  path '@localID',
                  caseNo     varchar2(100) path 'episodeDetails/caseNo',
                  address1   varchar2(100) path 'episodeDetails/address1',
                  address4   varchar2(100) path 'episodeDetails/address4',
                  postcode   varchar2(100) path 'episodeDetails/postcode',
                  familyName varchar2(100) path 'episodeDetails/familyName',
                  firstName  varchar2(100) path 'episodeDetails/firstName',
                  dobEst     varchar2(100) path 'episodeDetails/dobEst',
                  dob        date          path 'episodeDetails/dob',
                  gender     varchar2(100) path 'episodeDetails/gender',
                  dailyInter XMLTYPE       PATH 'dailyInterventions/dailyIntervention') (+) x,
         xmltable('/dailyIntervention'
                  passing x.dailyInter
                  COLUMNS
                  activityDate date          path 'activityDate',
                  ecg          varchar2(100) path 'ecg',
                  cpox         varchar2(100) path 'cpox') (+) y
    ;
Theoretically, only the second one should be necessary (on y), but I had to add the first as well to make it work.

Sometime it more efficeint to use UNION ALL that outer join

    Eg
    select x.*, y.*
    from tmp_xml t,
         xmltable('/ClientImport/episode[dailyIntervention]'

                  ecg          varchar2(100) path 'ecg',
                  cpox         varchar2(100) path 'cpox') (+) y
    UNION ALL
    select x.*, null,null...
      from tmp_xml t,
         xmltable('/ClientImport/episode[not(dailyIntervention)]'
                  PASSING t.object_value

    Yes, might worth a try.

I'm still suspicious on the different errors Irene's got so far though.

Here ia another sample of my dataset, this sample does not work with the solutions given above. Problem is not the diag and proc I included those in my original example and it worked. Wondering if this has something to do with the number of my elements (would be strange if it did), but so far that is the only difference I see between whats working and whats not.
