    Oracle Gateway Not Connecting to Sybase database

    gonzroman
      Hi,

      I'm trying to setup an oracle gateway to connect to Sybase database. I followed in details the instructions but still can connect successfully. The Oracle database is in RAC environment. Below are the steps I took:

      The oracle gateway and oracle database are in the same server while Sybase is on a separate unix box.

      1. create an initdg4sybs.ora file

      # This is a customized agent init file that contains the HS parameters
      # that are needed for the Database Gateway for Sybase

      #
      # HS init parameters
      #
      HS_FDS_CONNECT_INFO=[999.99.108.99]:4527/common ## IP address of sybase server
      HS_FDS_TRACE_LEVEL=ON
      HS_FDS_RECOVERY_ACCOUNT=RECOVER
      HS_FDS_RECOVERY_PWD=RECOVER

      2. create a listener on the oracle gateway home

      # listener.ora Network Configuration File: /u03/app/oracle/gateway/11.2/network/admin/listener.ora
      # Generated by Oracle configuration tools.

      LISTENER_DG4SYSBS =
      (DESCRIPTION_LIST =
      (DESCRIPTION =
      (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = IPC)(KEY = EXTPROC1543))
      (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = 99.999.155.26)(PORT = 1543)(IP = FIRST)) #IP address of oracle gateway (node A)
      (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = 99.999.155.24)(PORT = 1543)(IP = FIRST)) #IP address of oracle gateway (node B)
      )
      )

      SID_LIST_LISTENER_DG4SYSBS=
      (SID_LIST=
      (SID_DESC=
      (SID_NAME=dg4sybs)
      (ORACLE_HOME=/u03/app/oracle/gateway/11.2)
      (ENVS="LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/u03/app/oracle/gateway/11.2/dg4sybs/driver/lib:/u03/app/oracle/gateway/11.2/lib")
      (PROGRAM=dg4sybs)
      )
      )

      ADR_BASE_LISTENER = /u03/app/oracle/gateway/11.2
      TRACE_LEVEL_LISTENER_DG4SYSBS = OFF
      TRACE_FILE_LISTENER_DG4SYSBS = /u03/app/oracle/gateway/11.2/network/admin/LISTENER_DG4SYBS.trc
      INBOUND_CONNECT_TIMEOUT_LISTENER_DG4SYSBS=0

      3. create tnsnames.ora in oracle database home

      dg4sybs =
      (DESCRIPTION =
      (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = 99.999.155.26)(PORT = 1543)) #IP address of Node A
      (CONNECT_DATA =
      (SERVER = DEDICATED) #added for single node test
      (SID = dg4sybs)
      )
      (HS=OK)
      )

      4. create database link

      create database link dg4sybs connect to "user" identified by "password" using 'dg4sybs'

      5. when testing the connection; i'm getting below error message. tried all the setup based my research and couldn't make it work.

      SQL> select * from dual@dg4sybs
      2 /
      select * from dual@dg4sybs
      *
      ERROR at line 1:
      ORA-03113: end-of-file on communication channel
      Process ID: 7427
      Session ID: 495 Serial number: 787

      I perform above settings on a standalone database running in windows and successfully connect to the sybase. In UNIX setup, been unsuccessful. Can someone please help.

          Sorry, it's not clear enough for me when you state "I perform above settings on a standalone database running in windows and successfully connect to the sybase. In UNIX setup, been unsuccessful".

          Did you use the same gateway or did you configure a separate gateway on Windows with a stand alone database?

          When you are able to use the stand alone database on the Windows machine, then test this database with the Oracle gateway running on your RAC box and perform the select, does this work?

          If yes, what's the Oracle database version you're using on the Windows machine and whats the Oracle database version on your RAC box?

            Appreciate your response.

            What I mean, I have separate setup in windows environment. Installed Oracle Database and Sybase Gateway for windows and apply same steps as I describe and works perfect in Windows.

            Then, we installed a Unix version of Gateway for our Oracle database in Unix applying same steps and couldn't get work it. In Unix, we have RAC database setup but gateway was only installed on the single node.

            Oracle version:

            Unix: 11.2.0.3.0
            Windows: 11.2.0.1.0

            Windows:

            SQL> select * from dual@dg4sybs; --- successful

            D
            -
            X

            Unix:

            SQL> select * from dual@dg4sybs;
            select * from dual@dg4sybs
            *

              Hi,
              Can you ping the Sybase machine 999.99.108.99 from the Unix machine 99.999.155.26 ? Make sure there isn't a firewall bewteen the machines also.

              You could also try the steps in this note -

              After Migrating an Oracle Database From 9.2, 10.1 or 10.2 to 11.2 Heterogeneous Gateway Connections using 11.2 Gateway Can Show Strange Data When The DB Link Already Exists Prior Migration (Doc ID 1203633.1)

              to drop the HS_CLASSES or run catnohs.sql and caths.sql to rebuild the gateway data dictionary.

              Regards,
              Mike

                Thank for your reply. I can ping the sybase server successfully.

                jrc1sudb01a:/u03/app/oracle/gateway/11.2/dg4sybs/admin $ ping 999.99.108.99
                999.99.108.99 is alive

                Will ask our DBA to look on the DocID you gave.

                  From my point of view it would be best now when you do the cross check. Use the gateway on the Windows machine and connect with your Oracle database on Unix to the Gateway on Windows to connect to the Sybase database. Then do the same with the Database on Windows using the gateway on Unix and connecting to the Sybase database.

                  It is just to check which component is causing the problem.

                    From the test you recommended: unix database using windows sybase gateway connecting to sybase database

                    1. created a tns entry in unix database

                    gtw_c320_scra =
                    (DESCRIPTION =
                    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = 999.999.999.99)(PORT = 1522)) #windows server where gateway is running
                    (CONNECT_DATA =
                    (SID = dg4sybs_c320_scra)
                    )
                    (HS=OK)
                    )

                    2. create database link in unix database

                    create database link gtw_c320_scra connect to "ro" identified by "xxxxxx" using 'gtw_c320_scra';

                    3. test connection and failed

                    SQL> select * from dual@gtw_c320_scra;
                    select * from dual@gtw_c320_scra
                    *
                    ERROR at line 1:
                    ORA-28545: error diagnosed by Net8 when connecting to an agent

                    ORA-02063: preceding 2 lines from GTW_C320_SCRA

                    Is my steps correct? I didn't do anything on the windows side except starting the gateway. I will proceed on the windows to unix gateway testing but want to confirm if the steps I took is correct.

                    Addition: there's a initdg4sybs_c320_scra.ora already in place on the windows side.

                      28545 is a configuration issue. Does the tns alias on the Unix side match the one you defined on the Windows side (host, port, SID)?
                      What about "tnsping gtw_c320_scra " does it return successfull?
                      Could you also please post the status of the Oracle Gtw Listener on Windows (lsnrctl status <listener name)>?

                                the unix db version is 11.2.0.3 and windows db version is 11.2.0.1, should this matter?

                                  Thank you for those that responded, I appreciate your time. My setup is finally working.

                                  I think the issue is 'select from dual' on the unix version of gateway is not really working. I focused my testing on this SQL statement coz that what is working for me on windows setup and this what I read from the documentation too. I came along on 1 of the unix document for gateway and tried querying another sybase table and all of a sudden it's worked.

                                  It's embarassing (-: but part of the learning process.
