log_archive_format parameter in data guard

Oracle RDBMS : 11.2.0.2 RAC on RHEL 5.6 and we are using ASM,OMF

Is it mandatory to set log_archive_format to "arc" i.e., log_archive_format='%t_%s_%r.arc' . My primary has log_archive_format='%t_%s_%r.dbf' and for data guard physical standby the parameter is changed to '%t_%s_%r.arc'.

1)The default is in "dbf" and to change the parameter we need to shutdown the database.
We don't want our production to be shutdown, and so what happens if i don't change the parameter and leave it as "dbf".

2)What is the difference between .arc and .dbf for log_archive_format?

3)Can we have primary in .dbf and standby in .arc, and we are planning to have our backups on standby so are standby backups can be used at primary with different log_archive_format if needed?if no why?

    Hello;

    Have not tested, but I cannot see where anything negative or anything would happen to impact you.

    Beside the letters nothing. Its just the extension you give to the file name.

    You can. I like to keep things the same if possible myself.

    Hi

    Is log_archive_format parameter required? Then why it is we needed to set log_archive_format parameter while building physical standby.
