Hi Guru's,

I am new to HP-UX, and want to install and configure Oracle RAC 11g r2 on HP-UX 11.31 IA64. I have below five shared devices on which i want to configure ASM for grid installation;

On Host 1 :
===========================

bash-4.2# ioscan -m dsf

.
.
.
*/dev/rdisk/disk183*
/dev/rdsk/c13t0d2
/dev/rdsk/c15t0d2
/dev/rdsk/c9t0d2
/dev/rdsk/c17t0d2
*/dev/rdisk/disk184*
/dev/rdsk/c13t0d3
/dev/rdsk/c15t0d3
/dev/rdsk/c9t0d3
/dev/rdsk/c17t0d3
*/dev/rdisk/disk185*
/dev/rdsk/c13t0d4
/dev/rdsk/c15t0d4
/dev/rdsk/c9t0d4
/dev/rdsk/c17t0d4
*/dev/rdisk/disk186*
/dev/rdsk/c13t0d5
/dev/rdsk/c15t0d5
/dev/rdsk/c9t0d5
/dev/rdsk/c17t0d5
*/dev/rdisk/disk187*
/dev/rdsk/c13t0d6
/dev/rdsk/c15t0d6
/dev/rdsk/c9t0d6
/dev/rdsk/c17t0d6

===============================

If i am not wrong Service Guard is not mandatory for this configuration, could you please tell me the step's to configure these five volumes as ASM volumes ? Also one more question ; Is SLVM configuration is mandatory to configure ASM ?

I just want to configure normal ASM devices like we do in Linux.

Thanks,
Ashish

    ASMLib is only available on Linux: so you cannot use it on HP-UX.

    Did you read "Configuring Disk Devices for Oracle ASM section" from Oracle® Grid Infrastructure Installation Guide 11g Release 2 (11.2) for HP-UX
    http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E11882_01/install.112/e24615/storage.htm#CDEDGBFE ?

    The easiest way should be to install Grid Software in the interactive way and let the installer:
    1. discover your ASM disks
    2. create the ASM instance

    Note that in ASM there is no ASM volume: there are ASM disks and ASM disk groups made up of ASM disks.

    Thanks Forst,

    I am little confused in this document;

    Suppose i ran "ioscan -m dsf", and the out put is

    .
    .
    .
    */dev/rdisk/disk183* /dev/rdsk/c13t0d2
    /dev/rdsk/c15t0d2
    /dev/rdsk/c9t0d2
    /dev/rdsk/c17t0d2
    .
    .
    .

    So here for "Native" devices like;

    /dev/rdsk/c13t0d2
    /dev/rdsk/c15t0d2
    /dev/rdsk/c9t0d2
    /dev/rdsk/c17t0d2

    we have to run below command's or for */dev/rdisk/disk183* ?

    # chown grid:asmadmin /dev/rdsk/cxtydz
    # chmod 660 /dev/rdsk/cxtydz

    Please let me know i am missing something here.

    Thanks,
    Ashish

    Sorry but I cannot really help more.

    If you have a Oracle support contract you can try to use documents mentioned in MOS note "RAC and Oracle Clusterware Best Practices and Starter Kit (HP-UX) [ID 811303.1]"
    (although there are only documents for 10gR2 and 11gR1: 11gR2 is missing ... ).

    If you know some Oracle Corp. employee or HP employee you may try to get access to http://www.hporaclectc.com which should have the right documentation named "cookbook".

    You can find cookbook for RAC 11gR1 on HP-UX on RAC SIG site: http://www.oracleracsig.org/pls/apex/APEX_UTIL.COUNT_CLICK?p_url=RAC_SIG.download_my_file?p_file=1003667&p_id=1003667&p_cat=documents&p_user=nobody&p_company=994323795175833.

    Successfully Configured RAW devices with below steps;

    /dev/rdisk/

    disk182, disk183, disk184, disk185, disk186, disk187

    dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/rdisk/disk182 bs=1024 count=100
    dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/rdisk/disk183 bs=1024 count=100
    dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/rdisk/disk184 bs=1024 count=100
    dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/rdisk/disk185 bs=1024 count=100
    dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/rdisk/disk186 bs=1024 count=100
    dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/rdisk/disk187 bs=1024 count=100

    chown grid:asmadmin /dev/rdisk/disk182
    chown grid:asmadmin /dev/rdisk/disk183
    chown grid:asmadmin /dev/rdisk/disk184
    chown grid:asmadmin /dev/rdisk/disk185
    chown grid:asmadmin /dev/rdisk/disk186
    chown grid:asmadmin /dev/rdisk/disk187

    chmod 660 /dev/rdisk/disk182
    chmod 660 /dev/rdisk/disk183
    chmod 660 /dev/rdisk/disk184
    chmod 660 /dev/rdisk/disk185
    chmod 660 /dev/rdisk/disk186
    chmod 660 /dev/rdisk/disk187

    For Oracle database installation, assign "asmadmin" & "asmdba" groups to "oracle" user. Here i am not using service guard just for your information.

    Thanks.
