2 days working on this and i ended up fixing it myself in the end!
I used netadm to enable the DefaultFixed profile, thereby stopping the Automatic management of the interface - then i was able to create the address myself and push the hostname up to the DHCP server.

The url you're referencing is pointing to an S10 document. If you are enabling DefaultFixed, you must be running S11.1?, so try these docs
instead. The 2nd link is to a command quick reference for setting various network parameters:
