I've tried to just install the client on my remote computer (laptop runningXP home spec OK) But it does not offfer any options you must install the whole package. I just wnat the client on the remote and not the full XE package. Any help would be greatly appreciated. As you will realised I'm a newbie to Oracle.

XE is a full database install. If you want to only install the client, you have several choices depending on what you intend to do with the client.

    1. Install SQL Developer, which is a GUI SQL client - http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/developer-tools/sql-developer/downloads/index.html
    2. Install a bare bones client called InstantClient - http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/database/features/instant-client/index-097480.html
    3. Install a full fledged client - http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/database/enterprise-edition/downloads/112010-win32soft-098987.html

Are you referring to the 10g XE Client? (yes, there was a client install package of XE, not sure why though)

Note that no Oracle release was ever certified on any "Home" edition of Windows. Please refer to System Requirements section of Installation Guide.

I just wnat the client on the remote and not the full XE package.
I would recommend option 2 for "run-time" usage or 1 for ad-hoc querying or dev style usage, or both 1 and 2, from Srini's reply above.

Also, if you want to do dotnet development/deployment, look for ODAC Client packages, e.g. ODAC Xcopy.

I can run a fulkl instsallation of XE 10g on the Laptop with Windows XP home installed, however all I wanted on the laptop was the Client software so that I can use this to futher my knowledge.
