    Ahh I usually do a controlfile rebuild whenever starting up a new instance, that fixes redo logfiles as part of the process.

    Try grabbing the redo files from that backup, copy them to the folder named in the alertlog ...FAST_RECOVERY_AREA...

    Or move the CONTROL.DBF file out of the way, do a startup mount and run a create controlfile script to build a new controlfile.

    If you've ever done one or two of those, its trivial. First time, not so much. If pulling the redolog files from backup doesn't work, you already have a list of the datafiles and that is about 90% of completing a create controlfile task.

    Recovered the original two files:

    O1_MF_1_82TNGPV9_
    O1_MF_2_82TNGRDB_

    Tried running the alter database open again and received:

    SQL> connect /as sysdba

    If I am to delete control.dbf and then run a create controfile script to build a new controlfile, what are those steps?

    I found this in another forum. Are these correct:

    The correct answer there is either 'startup', 'startup nomount', or 'startup mount'. Can't go from shutdown to open, you can only go to open from the mount mode.
    found this in another forum. Are these correct:
    No. Not for your database, adjustments to the create controlfile statement are needed. The correct filenames as well as the correct database name. The:
    CREATE CONTROLFILE REUSE DATABASE "XE" ...
    is part of the SQL needed, not the 'set database "...' line. The database character should also be specified in the create controlfile statement, for 11g XE its AL32UTF8. The LOGFILE stanza needs adjustment, filenames. Look at the direction of the slashes, that should tell you that its not quite correct for your host.
    to build a new controlfile, what are those steps?
    First try a plain startup instead of the 'alter database open'. It may work, it may not. If it does not work, then yes, startup nomount, run the *correct* create controlfile statement, alter database open, and (re)add the temporary datafile.

    If you really want to try a create controlfile statement, in the ...ORADATA\XE directory make a REDO folder, *rename* CONTROL.DBF to CONTROL.DBF.bk0 and sqlplus ... startup nomount and:

    {code}
    CREATE CONTROLFILE REUSE DATABASE "XE" RESETLOGS NOARCHIVELOG
    LOGFILE
    'C:\ORACLEXE\APP\ORACLE\ORADATA\XE\REDO\REDO01.DBF' SIZE 50M,
    'C:\ORACLEXE\APP\ORACLE\ORADATA\XE\REDO\REDO02.DBF' SIZE 50M
    DATAFILE
    'C:\ORACLEXE\APP\ORACLE\ORADATA\XE\SYSTEM.DBF',
    'C:\ORACLEXE\APP\ORACLE\ORADATA\XE\UNDOTBS1.DBF',
    'C:\ORACLEXE\APP\ORACLE\ORADATA\XE\SYSAUX.DBF',
    'C:\ORACLEXE\APP\ORACLE\ORADATA\XE\USERS.DBF',
    'C:\ORACLEXE\APP\ORACLE\ORADATA\XE\APEX_1303222700452456.DBF'
    CHARACTER SET AL32UTF8
    ;
    {code}

    Adding in a 'recover database;' after running the create controlfile statement might throw an error, but if recovery is not needed that is normal.

    The tempfile will also have to be (re)added *after* the 'alter database open' if it succeeds. The new controlfile has no information on the tempfiles and temporary tablespaces are not relevant in a recovery situation, they only matter in an open database, when a user session needs temp space for sorting operations, to fix it:

    {code}
    ALTER TABLESPACE TEMP ADD TEMPFILE 'C:\ORACLEXE\APP\ORACLE\ORADATA\XE\TEMP.DBF'
    SIZE 200M REUSE AUTOEXTEND ON NEXT 100M MAXSIZE 2000M;
    {code}

    First try a plain startup instead of the 'alter database open'.
    That worked. But I continued with the rest of your suggestions.

    1. Made REDO folder
    2. Renamed CONTROL.DBF to CONTROL.DBF.bk0

    tempfile will also have to be (re)added after the 'alter database open'
    Create controlfile steps:

    Database closed/shutdown.
    Move controlfile so the instance can create a new controlfile.
    Startup nomount.
    Run create controlfile statement. This leaves the instance in the mount state, recovery can be done.
    Recover database, if needed. If the datafiles are from a cold backup (shutdown) this step can be skipped.
    Alter database open.
    Add tempfile(s).
    Done.

    For a double check, its good to run a complete shutdown/startup cycle. When the instance is not in archivelog mode, recovery is not possible anyway.

    shutdown immediate;
    startup;

    And for future use, its handy to make a controlfile trace backup, this will create a trace file with all these steps in the .../diag/rdbms/.../trace directory, run this statement as system or sysdba and find the trace file (%ORACLE_SID%_ora_<n>.trc) generated in the trace folder. If you don't specify resetlogs or noresetlogs you'll have both versions of the steps in that file. Can also use the 'as' clause to specify a different location and filename.

    alter database backup controlfile to trace [as '<drive>:\<path>\<filename>'] resetlogs ;

    Thank you for your help. Your steps went a little quick for me but I tried to follow. These are the steps I performed:

    0. sqlplus /nolog
    1. connect /as sysdba
    2. shutdown immediate
    3. moved current controlfile
    4. ran:

    SQL> CREATE CONTROLFILE REUSE DATABASE "XE" RESETLOGS NOARCHIVELOG
    2 LOGFILE
    3 'C:\ORACLEXE\APP\ORACLE\ORADATA\XE\REDO\REDO01.DBF' SIZE 50M,
    4 'C:\ORACLEXE\APP\ORACLE\ORADATA\XE\REDO\REDO02.DBF' SIZE 50M
    5 DATAFILE
    6 'C:\ORACLEXE\APP\ORACLE\ORADATA\XE\SYSTEM.DBF',
    7 'C:\ORACLEXE\APP\ORACLE\ORADATA\XE\UNDOTBS1.DBF',
    8 'C:\ORACLEXE\APP\ORACLE\ORADATA\XE\SYSAUX.DBF',
    9 'C:\ORACLEXE\APP\ORACLE\ORADATA\XE\USERS.DBF',
    10 'C:\ORACLEXE\APP\ORACLE\ORADATA\XE\APEX_1303222700452456.DBF'
    11 CHARACTER SET AL32UTF8
    12 ;
    Control file created.

    5. datafiles were from a cold backup so I assumed recovery was not needed
    6. upon running :

    Alter database open

    received:

    ERROR at line 1:
    ORA-01589: must use RESETLOGS or NORESETLOGS option for database open

    Thanks.

    Just add resetlogs to the alter database open statement, no need to repeat all those steps again.

    There's lots more to managing an RDBMS, although restoring from a backup is a frequent chore for the dba. Also its good to get familiar with the documentation, its quite thorough but that also means it can be difficult to locate an exact how-to quickly. The 2-Day DBA Guide is a good place to start, for XE at: http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E17781_01/server.112/e18804/toc.htm

    And there will be several features available to XE that aren't covered in the XE documentation, the full 11gR2 documentation set is at http://www.oracle.com/pls/db112/portal.all_books

    Enabling archivelog mode for hot backups is a good thing to do, that way the instance does not have to be shutdown to get a good backup.

    That statement seemed to work. It outputted "database altered" and after adding the temp file it outputted "tablespace altered". However, still nothing at the startup page.

    Here's the lastest alert file. Would you be open to setting up a remote assistance session to get this resolved? I would be willing to compensate for all of your time.

    It seems you have managed to open the database.

    The unavailable Get Started page is likely a minor problem.

    Please post output from lsnrctl stat.

    You could also try the following:

    Stop the listener (e.g. via Services, OracleXETNSListener)

    Move listener.ora (network\admin\listener.ora, rename to listener.ora_xe)

    Start listener, which will now use default listener parameters.

    Wait at least one minute for instance to register services.

    Again, run and post output from lsnrctl stat - and try the Get Started url.

    I moved the listener file and restarted the services - a new one was not created.

    How would I output from lsnrctl stat?

    That's expected. It uses a built-in set of (default) parameter values (when a listener.ora is not found/loaded).

    How would I output from lsnrctl stat?
    Open command window (cmd). Then enter the command.

    Here should be a http endpoint, that Apex and Get Started app uses.
    Services Summary...
    Service "XEXDB" has 1 instance(s).
    Instance "xe", status READY, has 1 handler(s) for this service...
    Service "xe" has 1 instance(s).

    Services ok, XDB is there but no endpoint.

    Well, perhaps firewall rules have changed in the process.

    Could you, at least for 1 minute, try disabling the Windows firewall? During that time bounce Oracle XE (stop and start the service/database), then see if another endpoints shows up from lsnrctl stat.

    Do you know for sure that Get Started worked before?

    Post if possible output from:
    hostname
    ping -4 <hostname result here>
    ping -4 localhost
