Cannot connect to 127.0.0.1:8080/apex or /htmldb (home page problems)

Hello there,

After installing for the first time the Database 11g Express Edition on my PC, I cannot connect to the local host, in order to access the home page of the database. The error encountered is from the browser, saying that it cannot find the page. Please help.

This question is posted after *7 hours* of searching the web (mainly on this forum) on which I haven't found my solution, so please read the following before you answer:

OS: Windows 7 Ultra 32bit
Operating port - the default 8080, which is not used by any other service at this moment (verified with netstat)
Status of Listener: running (verified with lstnerl status)
Browser: Chrome with no proxy (whatsoever)
Services running (and restarted to make sure): OracleServiceXe, OracleXETNSListener and I have manually started OracleXeClrAgent and MTSRecovery
Database: running, according to the "Start Database" batch

Observations:
- when issuing netstat in the above presented conditions, I have nothing on port 8080, where the HTTP Server should be
- according to the executable made by ORACLE, my database is running but when trying to connect with "sqlplus /nolog" as "system" it gives me error number 01033: initialization or shutdown in progress, which is weird. Even weirder is that the prompt changes to SQL, after this error (like nothing happened).

I don't know what to do, honestly. I have tried everything that I found in the search section until the moment, but nothing helped. Can you please lay it out to me, in a simple form so that anyone could understand? My knowledge is limited, this is the first time when I play with Oracle.

open Command Window & enter the lines below EXACTLY as presented here

    sqlplus
    / as sysdba
    shutdown abort
    startup
    exit

COPY all the results from above then PASTE all back here

You're exact commands did not work, but here's what I did:
#sqlplus /nolog (sqlplus asked for an user) LE: I tried logging with "system" user and it showed the same results
    #connect /as sysdba
    #shutdown abort
    #startup

As a result, the Oracle instance was first shut, and then started. On the last step I received "ORA-00205 error in identifying control file, check alert log for more info".
Don't know where to find this file..

Don't know where to find this file..
check alert log for more info
do OS file FIND of "alert_XE.log" filename.

    the controlfile typically resides in the same folder as where "system01.dbf" file resides;
which is usually somewhere under the "oradata" folder.

I have not find such a file. And the only thing available in Oradata is an empty folder, called XE.

L.E: Oh wait, I found it.

Well maybe you should have searched this forum: Oracle Database Express Edition (XE)

Among first things to check is if log files under config\log\ directory, e.g. cloneRmanRestore.log, contain any errors from db creation during installation.

Please, don't send any more links unless it's toward my specific problem. I've searched, as I said, for 7 hours. I'm full of it. I'm at the point of throwing my PC out of the window.

    Thank you.

What is the "specific problem" exactly?

If you don't aim to find out what the problem is and why it is, easiest way forward, or at least to the side, is probably to deinstall XE, then make sure Windows event logs are free/not full, then re-install (and hope for better luck).

from Command Window issue OS command below

    dir /q/t C:\ORACLEXE\APP\ORACLE\ORADATA\XE\

You were right. It seems that I had some problems with the memory. Certain files could not be created during installation because I was low on storage. This is a bit strange, considering the software required around 500MB and I had 2GB free.

Leaving that aside, I've reinstalled on another drive and it has worked. The only problem that seems to be now is that I cannot go pass the logon screen - from the browser. I insert the "system" user and the password set when installing, and it does nothing. My firewall is shut btw.

When I log in from the command line using #sqlplus, the user and the SAME password, it works. Any ideas?

P.S: This happens for Apex. When I try to go to 127.0.0.1:htmldb it says that the requested URL has not been found

Which of the login screens? Try to navigate and log on per Getting Started guide. http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E17781_01/index.htm

Note that Apex user != database user, which might be one explanation to the login/password difference you perceived.

The html db url posted is wrong (bad port number) and htmldb is also an older term, which may not exist or work in recent versions of the product (can't remember how it behaved in 2.x and 3.x).

As sb said below, this is a separate question and is better off in a separate thread.
