    Manager's port not reachable

    BlueSkies
      Golden Gate version: 11.2.1.0.3
      DB version : 11.2.0.3
      Platform : Solaris 10

      I am trying to setup Golden Gate on Solaris. I have two solaris 10 Virtual Machines created using Virtual Box.
      On the source machine , I started the MANAGER process on port 3125.
      $ cat mgr.prm
      port 3125
      dynamicportlist 8001, 8002, 9500-9520
      purgeoldextracts /u01/GG/11.2.1.0.3/dirdat/*, usecheckpoints
      $
      $
      $
      $ pwd
      /u01/GG/11.2.1.0.3/dirprm
      $ cd ..
      $
      $
      $ ./ggsci

      Manager started.

      GGSCI (tigris178) 2> info mgr

      Manager is running (IP port tigris178.3125).

      PROGRAM MGR     PROCESSID       MGR     PORT    tigris178.3125  PID     943
      From target machine, when I try telnet command to check if the port is open, it throws error. ping works fine though
      $ telnet 192.168.0.178 3125
      Trying 192.168.0.178...

      # ping 192.168.0.178
      192.168.0.178 is alive

      The netstat output from 192.168.0.178 shows TIME_WAIT

            *.3125                            *.*                             0      0 49152      0 LISTEN
      There is no firewall configured between these VMs. I tried using several other ports. But it is still the same issue. To verify that there is no firewall , I brought down manager process and started DB Listener using the same port. I managed to connect to the DB through listener from remote machines without any issues.

      For the manager process to work properly , Is there any other mandatory process which i should start so that this port will remain open and usable? I believe this has something to do with GG architecture as I was able to use DB listener on this port without any issues.

      Initially, I faced this issue in Target machine's Manager process port. So, i thought of diagnosing from scratch and I started the manager process in source and did telnet test. The telnet test fails for both Source and Target Manager process ports.

          Why are you trying to telnet to port 3125 when it is configured for GG? My undestanding is this port will only listen to GGSCI commands and not to any other service such as telnet.

            For a very basic Unidirectonal setup:
            At first, in source (192.168.0.178) I configured Manager, EXTRACT and PUMP successfully.
            Then in target (192.168.0.179) , I configured REPLICAT.
            But the PUMP in source was ABENDING , when I checked PUMP's report, I saw
            TCP/IP error 146 (Connection refused), endpoint: 192.168.0.179:3125
            So, I did the telnet test to manager processes in both source and target. On both servers I've configured 3125 as the port for Manager process. But both of the below commands failed.
            telnet <TargetHostIP> 3125

            telnet <SourceHostIP> 3125
            I tried changing the port numbers like the default 7809 to see if it fixes the issue. It didn't

              Do not know whats going wrong. I have a suceessfullyrunning GG setup and i can not telnet from one server to another. So we can not rely on telnet to check if these servers can communicate through GG.
              I would suggest you work with your network guys to see if these servers/ports are configured for TCP/IP requests.

                Check firewall. TCP's ICMP requests will either be blocked or a ping test will timeout when the port is blocked, even though you can telnet to the server/port.

                Why 3125? It's not that you cannot use other ports, but what is your rationale? Did you check to see how 3125 is (or is not) used?

                  But at my workplace I can telnet succesfully to the manager's port 7809. We have GG running on RHEL 5.4 and AIX 6. I was able to telne for both RHEL and AIX without any issues. It looked
                  $ telnet 10.80.16.214 7809
                  Trying 10.80.16.214...

                  For me , the ping worked but the telnet command was not working.

                  Why 3125 ?
                  3125 is just a randon port I am trying after unsuccesfully trying several ports like 8005, 8001, 15000, the default 7809, ...etc .

                  3125 is not used by any other services in this machine. It is not listed in /etc/services.

                  Later today I am going to try something like port 19792 for manager process

                  Thank for the services list you've provided. I've noticed that 1521 had been snatched by Maxine for something called "nCube License Manager" :)

                    Oracle used to have deep hooks into nCube.

                        Is the manager process on both sides of your environment up and running?  The managers have to be up and running for connections to be made.  Check the mgr.prm file for the port number as well.  Do you have anything in the error log?

                        Thanks
