I seen that official hard drive sizes at the moment of offering this machine was running till around 200GB. Will the integrated controller allow more, lets say 1TB for SATA drives?

The only caveat I foresee is whether differing SATA technologies can be functional (e.g. 1.5 versus 3.0Gbps SATA throughput - but then you'd just jumper the faster disk down to the slower operation).
Can the backplane be used with other SATA controllers instead of connecting it to the motherboard?... probably "yes" so long as you don't expect them to be your boot drive. You will need to go try it then return here to report what you've observed.
